Professor vs. LEADER

Aaron Ortega is our speaker this week. He will be leading 4, three and a half hour lectures. He is focusing on Hearing the Voice of God, which Aaron shared is ironic because he was born half deaf. But, hearing the voice of God has nothing to do with hearing with your ears. Off the bat, Aaron shared his testimony, which was substantial in establishing trust and credibility. I immediately compared this to the staleness of a college classroom. Aaron’s fire and power in his passion captivated me. The three and a half hours flew by. I couldn’t get enough. His words were challenging. I felt them and could apply everything to my life. I wanted to share some of my notes in the hopes that they impact you as well.

  • You can know the bible, but if you don’t know how to live it, you are a meaningless Christian
  • God speaking is all about availability
  • You can panic or turn to God
  • Seize the moment, take the moment and thrive
  • The voice of God instructs you to freedom
  • Your world can fall down but everything will be Ok because “I am here on the voice of the Lord”
  • Not here on confidence, I am here on the assurance of the Lord
  • Intimacy with the Lord is closeness, knowing, security

Theology (Study of God)

  1. Apologetic- defending the truth, evidence of God, making a case for God
  2. Systematic- patterns of truth (redemption, love), consistency, principals, doctrine (intimacy throughout the bible)
  3. Historical- cultural facts, reasons for decisions (discrimination, laws at the time), explaining ‘whys’
  4. Philosophical- reasoning, ambiguous, wonder, discovering, the art of God

  • We learn how to talk by listening
  • What is God saying to you when you’re alone in your room, what is He saying in your heart?
  • Learn to listen spiritually; God’s voice is not always a direct, audible voice, it can be a feeling, dreams, visions
  • Ask more questions
  • Learn to question yourself, own beliefs, identity
  • Questions have to start with humility, admitting you do not know the answers
  • Intimacy is powerful because it is forever

Holy Spirit, what do you want to teach me today? When I personally asked this question, I was given the word ‘Patience’, which was cool because we then went over the verse Luke 8:14, “As for that in the good soil, they are those who, hearing the word, hold fast in an honest and good heart, and bear fruit with patience.”

  • You can’t learn until you are available

Learning to Listen to God’s Voice:

  • Protects us from mistakes- “I didn’t include God in my plans”
  • Produces life- God can put you in your element because He knows you best
  • Freedom- puts you in a place of security, freedom does not mean comfortable, the world can fall apart and you will be free (Roman 6: Being a slave to sin), when you are a slave to sin, the world crashes down and you crash down with it

ex. Coming to YWAM was extremely out of my comfort zone, I was stuck in my ways and could have played it safe by taking the easy way out (not dealing with opinions of others, finances, etc) by staying home. I have never felt more free and at peace than being here, then by trusting God’s call.

Luke 8 The Sower- “To you it has been given to know the secrets of the kingdom of God.”

  • Jesus is speaking to His disciples
  • The access we have as believers, followers
  • We are able to see and carry the truth

Verses 5, 12- Hard path- The ones along the path are those who have heard; then the devil comes and takes away the word from their hearts, so that they may not believe and be saved.”

  • Narrow minded/close minded
  • God is trying to speak to you
  • Must let go of that attitude and mentality
  • We can ignore God, which quenches the holy spirit
  • God wants to use you
  • Be transformed by the renewing of your mind
  • Be willing to let God talk

Is there pride, bitterness (challenging people), fear (afraid, have been hurt) in your heart?

“Therefore put away all filthiness and rampant wickedness and receive with meekness the implanted word, which is able to save your souls.” James 1:2

Imagine your past mistakes and sin. Now imagine laying aside all of that pitifulness, bitterness, and fear. That is the life Jesus offers us.

“And the ones on the rock are those who, when they hear the word, receive it with joy. But these have no root; they believe for a while, and in time of testing fall away.” -Luke 8:13

  • The roots don’t go deep
  • It does not take much for the plant to wither in hard circumstances

The Shallow and Rocky Soil Represents:

  • A superficial mind
  • Emotionally touched but not transformed
  • They don’t want any depth or to be challenged
  • Show fruit in transformation and change

How do we Develop Roots in your Heart with Jesus?

  1. Daily time with God
  2. Godly community
  • Where you go, Jesus goes
  • “not neglecting to meet together as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another, and all the more as you see the Day drawing near.” –Hebrews 10:25
  • Eliminate distractions
  • If you’re going to go deep, be intentional

“And as for what fell among the thorns, they are those who hear, but as they go on their way they are choked by the cares and riches and pleasures of life, and their fruit does not mature.” Luke 8:14

  • Always on the go
  • Busyness
  • Distracted
  • Drain the life out of you
  • If the enemy drains you, you become a drain
  • Preoccupied mind
  • Business doesn’t make you important, being productive makes you important
  • Be present

Jesus Needs to be your Lord; the Owner of your Property

  • This is a new season
  • move from glory to glory
  • you do not know who you are
  • You are not the author of your life
  • We should not be satisfied with who we are
  • We are spirit led
  • My life is no longer my own

“As for those that in the good soil, they are those who, hearing the word, hold it fast in an honest and good heart, and bear fruit with patience.” -Luke 8:15

  • Good soil- I hear it
  • Retain it- I remember it
  • Obey it- to persist until I see the fruit
  • “You are not just a pretty girl; God can use your hands, your voice”
  • You are a leader if you respect those around you
  • Godliness is not built on intimidation
  • The Holy Spirit is a gentlemen
