Live Fast, Die Young

We live in absolute fear of growing up, dreading our first jobs and responsibilities. Adulthood begins and the fun is over. The best part of our lives is done in a blink of an eye and the rest is downhill from here. We mourn the loss of our innocence, stuck in the past, entertaining and revisiting the good old days “when we were just kids”. We prolong and chase our children years by ignoring and denying the reality of growing up. We find a new rush, a synthetic wonder, and joy by escaping reality with drugs, alcohol, sex, partying, random hookups, gossiping, adrenaline, and risk. We come alive again when we are close to death. We would rather live fast and die young than get old…

“And said, “Truly, I say to you, unless you turn and become like children, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven.”

-Matthew 18:3

“But to all who did receive him, who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God…”

– John 1:12

“Do well in school, work hard and get a degree so you can be successful!” “Suffer now, but just you wait, it will be worth it!” says the apathetic, unmotivated, unfulfilled, divorced, depressed, midlife crisis victim…so I can what? Live for the weekend, dread every Sunday night, sit in traffic, join the rat race, get home late, binge in front of the TV, wake up, and repeat? Forever longing for the grass that’s greener. Why would we choose to be sober when reality sucks? When the only thing we have to look forward to is an escape. When we need our security blankets of substances and material items to be comfortable in our own skin, relax, let loose, have a good time, be ourselves and open up.

This constant state of nostalgia has to stop. We risk missing out on the best parts of life when we don’t leave the past where it belongs. Jesus calls us to live like children with childlike faith and wonder. He encourages us to look up to the way kids view life, without clouded perceptions and lenses of the world. Somewhere along the way, we’ve decided that our options are limited and the world really isn’t our oyster. Why do we ever stop dreaming and asking one another what we want to be when we grow up? Let us rejoice and embrace life in all stages. Let us find the innocence, victories, fun, and joy in the here and now.

“Your Kingdom COME, Your will be done on EARTH as it is in Heaven.”

-Matthew 6:10

God does not want us to wait for the promises of afterlife to start living. We have to start claiming the miracles and promises God is begging to give us here and now, on earth as it is in Heaven. Jesus is a gentleman, He will never force His will on us. He gives us free will. He is waiting eagerly for us to jump at His infinite blessings. He is constantly dreaming over our lives and interceding that we would align ourselves with His vision and will of joy, love, and hope. If we would just trust in His plan, we would see that His ways are perfect and a life with Him surpasses all of our wildest dreams and imagination. It is time to live a life worth living for, for a heavenly purpose, one that inspires others and reaps the blessings of the victory that has already been won. As long as our desires coincide with His, we cannot fail. I dare us to dream big and set big goals for our lives here on earth.

“Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.”

-Matthew 12:28-30

When we first get saved, the weight of the world is literally lifted off of our shoulders, but it doesn’t stop there. We are born again, filled with a new life, a holy purpose, a heavenly expectation for the promises that are here and those that await. We become the hands and feet towards the great renewal of all things. We join in the fight for a cause much bigger than ourselves, one that is worth fighting for, one that is worth living for. As we surrender ourselves to the power at the heart of the universe, the One that can only be seen with eyes like a child, we are overcome with delight as joy always comes in the morning. We no longer define our success and acceptance by the meer standard of the world but by the awestruck wonder of a God who would die and resurrect for us, who would stake our worth and reason for being on a cross. When we realize that death has no sting, the possibilities are endless and we run free like a child.

I made my first God-centered bucket list in December and thought I was aiming pretty high… but now I see how small my goals are when walking with such a big, extraordinary God. I have had the privilege to cross off a few things and am on the way to seeing many more fulfilled on the horizon. All because of Him. By sharing my list, it is my hope to encourage and inspire others to aim high and dream big. I also colored coded mine lol…
